Boat trip on Lago del Desierto & hike to Laguna Huemul

Discover the tranquil landscapes north of El Chaltén on an excursion that combines a scenic boat trip on Lago del Desierto with a short and gentle hike through forest and mountain terrain. This tour is perfect for those seeking a less demanding nature experience while venturing away from the area’s more popular hiking trails.

You’ll be picked up from your hotel in El Chaltén and driven towards Lago del Desierto, located approximately 37 km north of the town. The route follows a picturesque mountain road offering stunning views of rivers, forests, and the surrounding peaks.

Upon arrival at the southern end of the lake, you’ll board the boat for a roughly 50-minute cruise. As you glide across the clear waters surrounded by Patagonian beech forests, you can enjoy magnificent views of the Huemul and Vespignani glaciers. On a clear day, you may even catch a glimpse of the northern face of the iconic Fitz Roy Mountain. Along the way, your guide will share fascinating insights into the area’s history, geography, and natural environment.

After the boat trip, you’ll have around three hours to explore the area on your own. You can, for example, follow the trail to the beautiful Laguna Huemul, where a short walk through the forest rewards you with views of the turquoise-green lagoon and the striking Huemul Glacier. Afterwards, you’ll return to the boat and sail back across the lake before your transfer takes you back to El Chaltén.

As the weather in the Patagonian mountains is highly changeable and can shift dramatically within minutes, it’s important to bring warm clothing that you can easily layer on and off as the conditions change.
