Why travel to the Galapagos Islands?

The Galapagos Islands, located approximately 1,000 km off the coast of Ecuador, are an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean comprising 13 larger islands and hundreds of smaller ones. The archipelago first attracted widespread attention in the 19th century, when Charles Darwin found inspiration here for his groundbreaking theory of evolution.

Because the Galapagos Islands are so remote, they have developed wildlife so unique that most of the species found there exist nowhere else in the world. This unusual mix of species makes the Galapagos Islands a true paradise for animal lovers – and has earned the archipelago a well-deserved place on the UNESCO world heritage list.

At the same time, the Galapagos Islands are known for their spectacular scenery, shaped by volcanic activity over millions of years. The landscape is therefore predominantly rugged, with volcanic craters, rock formations and black-sand beaches, which in many places make the archipelago resemble a lunar landscape.

Unique wildlife

The wildlife of the Galápagos Islands is truly unique, with almost 9,000 different species found here. Of these, around 97% of the reptiles, 80% of the land birds and 20% of the marine animals are endemic, meaning they are found nowhere else. These include the Galápagos sea lion, the marine iguana and, perhaps most famously, the Galápagos giant tortoise.

It is difficult to establish exactly how the animals originally reached the Galápagos Islands. It is thought that they either arrived by sea or air, after which they gradually adapted to the islands’ unique conditions and evolved into the remarkable species that live here today.

However, the Galápagos Islands are not only home to endemic species. You can also find animals such as penguins, flamingos and the blue-footed booby, recognisable by its distinctive blue feet.

Dramatic volcanic landscapes

The Galápagos Islands were formed by volcanic activity, which is clearly reflected in the landscape, where black coastlines, rugged rock formations and deep craters bear witness to the archipelago’s dramatic origins. In several places, you can also explore lava tunnels – volcanic caves formed by solidified lava.  

Although the Galápagos Islands have existed for millions of years, several of them continue to change as a result of new volcanic eruptions, with lava flows reshaping the landscape. In fact, there have been more than 50 volcanic eruptions in the Galápagos Islands over the past 200 years, making the archipelago one of the most volcanically active places in the world. However, volcanic eruptions are often predictable and closely monitored by the authorities, making the archipelago safe to visit.

Enchanting islands 

The Galápagos consists of a number of large and small islands, and the type of tour you choose determines how many you get to experience. A cruise allows you to visit several islands, while island hopping gives you time to immerse yourself in a select few.

Only four of the Galápagos Islands are inhabited by people. On our tours, you can experience the main island of Santa Cruz, where you can explore dramatic lava tunnels and the Charles Darwin Research Station in the charming town of Puerto Ayora, as well as Isabela, which captivates visitors with beautiful beaches, majestic volcanoes and spectacular birdlife.

Our tours also give you the opportunity to experience some of the uninhabited Galápagos Islands. For example, you can explore Fernandina, dominated by the active La Cumbre volcano, and Santa Fé, where a large colony of sea lions makes its home on the white sandy beaches – as well as visiting several other fascinating islands.

Experiences on mainland Ecuador 

Before you set course for the Galapagos, your adventure begins with a tour to Ecuador on the mainland, where a wealth of exciting experiences awaits.

In Ecuador, you can look forward to visiting the capital, Quito, one of the highest-altitude capital cities in the world. Quito is brimming with historic architectural treasures, including the La Compañía de Jesús church and the Basílica del Voto Nacional. Just a short drive from the city centre, you’ll also find the iconic Equator Monument (La Mitad del Mundo), where you can stand with one foot on either side of the equator.

Ecuador is also a treasure trove of spectacular natural wonders. In Cotopaxi National Park, you can experience the world’s highest active snow-capped volcano, while Quilotoa crater lake offers breathtaking views. If you’re in need of some relaxation, take a dip in the natural hot springs of enchanting Baños.

In the city of Cusco, which was the capital of the Inca Empire before the Spanish colonised the region, you can admire both historic Inca monuments and architecture from the Spanish colonial era. You can also enjoy views of the beautiful Andes Mountains surrounding Cusco, which lies at an altitude of 3,399 metres.

Other highlights awaiting you in Peru include the village of Pisac, which enchants visitors with its colourful markets, and Ollantaytambo, known for its impressive Inca fortress. If you’re in need of some serious relaxation, Aguas Calientes offers the chance to bathe in hot springs at the foot of Machu Picchu.

Amazon rainforest

If you’d like to experience more of Ecuador’s spectacular natural beauty, you can combine your tour with a visit to the Amazon, which stretches across nine countries and accounts for 74% of Ecuador’s forested area.

In Tena, located in the upper reaches of the Ecuadorian Amazon, you can explore exotic plants and trees while keeping an eye out for colourful birds and fascinating insects. You can also visit the AmaZoonico rehabilitation centre, where you’ll meet animals such as monkeys, toucans and tortoises – and, if you’re lucky, even rarer wild cats such as the ocelot.

A tour of the Amazon also offers a fascinating introduction to cocoa production, giving you the chance to learn how the beans are processed before being used as the main ingredient in delicious chocolate.

The Galápagos Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean on the equator, approximately 1,000 kilometres from mainland Ecuador. The archipelago belongs to Ecuador, which lies in the north-western part of South America.

During this period, the water temperatures are warmer and visibility in the sea is better. The dry season is also fantastic, with less rainfall. However, you should expect cooler sea temperatures.

Should I choose island hopping or a cruise in the Galapagos Islands?

Whether you should choose island hopping or a cruise in the Galapagos Islands largely depends on your needs and wishes for the tour.

On a cruise, the boat serves as your home along the way, allowing you to experience several islands as well as more remote areas, where wildlife is often the only inhabitant. A cruise is typically more expensive and less flexible, however, and may not be ideal if you are prone to seasickness, as much of your stay takes place on the water.

With island hopping, you typically visit 2–3 selected islands, giving you the chance to explore island life independently while sleeping with solid ground beneath your feet – a clear advantage if you are prone to seasickness. Compared with a cruise, however, you will experience fewer islands and rarely get right up close to the uninhabited areas.

Whichever you choose – a cruise or island hopping in the Galápagos Islands – you are guaranteed unique wildlife and nature experiences that will take your breath away.

How much does a tour to the Galápagos Islands cost?

The Galápagos Islands are one of the more expensive destinations in South America. This is partly because the archipelago’s remote location makes it more expensive to transport people and supplies there, increasing the cost of operating tourism in the region.

The price also varies depending on whether you choose a cruise or island hopping. A cruise will typically be more expensive, as it gives you the opportunity to visit several islands, while island hopping is more affordable and allows you to immerse yourself in a select few island gems.

Do I need a visa for the Galápagos?

No, British citizens do not need a visa for the Galápagos Islands for stays of up to 90 days. However, you must have a British passport that is valid for at least six months after your return date.

However, if you have a connecting flight in another country, such as the USA or Canada, please be aware that different entry requirements may apply.

How do you get to the Galápagos?

To reach the Galápagos, you’ll need to fly from mainland Ecuador, which takes around 2.5 hours.

On our tours to the Galápagos, flights are always arranged and included in the price of the tour. A local guide will meet you on arrival, and when it’s time to leave, we’ll also make sure you’re well looked after on your way to the airport.

Do I need vaccinations for the Galápagos?

Yes, you will probably need to be vaccinated before travelling to the Galápagos. However, the vaccinations you need will depend on which ones you have already had, as well as whether you are travelling to the Galápagos via a country where yellow fever is present.

Although we’re experts in tours, we don’t know everything about vaccinations. To receive an accurate assessment of which vaccinations you need, we therefore recommend contacting your GP or an authorised vaccination clinic.

Is it safe to travel to the Galápagos?

Yes, it is safe to travel to the Galápagos Islands – in fact, the archipelago is often considered one of the safest destinations in South America.
