This morning, you’ll be picked up from your hotel and set off on a short drive towards the breathtaking landscape surrounding Ushuaia. Here, your hiking adventure begins – a scenic trek to the spectacular Emerald Lagoon. The route takes you through forests, wetlands, and open valleys framed by the dramatic mountains of Tierra del Fuego.
The hike isn’t technically challenging and can be completed by most people in reasonably good shape. However, Patagonia’s ever-changing weather can make the trek quite exciting – rain or snow may turn the trails muddy, adding a real sense of adventure to the wild surroundings. Waterproof footwear is highly recommended.
Along the way, you’ll come across several large beaver dams that have left a noticeable mark on the landscape. The area is, in fact, famous for its thriving beaver population. Back in the 1940s, the exotic animals were introduced from Canada in an attempt to establish a fur trade here. The plan failed, and the beaver population eventually grew to several thousand in the region around Ushuaia.
Upon your arrival at Emerald Lake, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the emerald-green lake, surrounded by rugged mountain peaks and unspoilt wilderness. There’s time here to relax, take photos, and enjoy your packed lunch amidst the spectacular scenery before returning along the same route.
The tour includes: Transport Ushuaia – start of route round trip, English-speaking guide, packed lunch, and a bottle of water
Distance: approx. 9 km (around 3–3.5 hours of hiking), with a total ascent of approximately 580 metres
Difficulty – technical: Easy
Difficulty – physical: Easy to moderate
Duration: Approx. 7 hours
Season: October – April
Remember to bring: Good hiking shoes (preferably waterproof), trekking clothes, fleece and waterproof jacket, hat, gloves, water, snacks, sunscreen, sun hat, sunglasses, and of course, a camera.
Note: The weather in the Patagonian mountains is highly changeable and can shift dramatically within minutes. It’s therefore important to bring warm clothing that can be layered or removed as conditions change. It is often quite windy during the season from October to March.
