Gaucho experiences in Patagonia

Just a short trip outside the centre of El Calafate lies the historic Estancia 25 de Mayo ranch, where you can gain a unique insight into life on the Patagonian steppe.

Upon arrival at the ranch, you’ll be greeted with a traditional cup of mate – a warm herbal drink enjoyed across South America – along with freshly-made crispy tortas fritas. You’ll then have the chance to watch the skilled sheepdogs in action as they round up the flock with impressive precision. The visit also takes you to the barn, where you can observe the traditional sheep-shearing methods and get a sense of the ranch’s everyday life.

After exploring the ranch’s workings, you can join a short walk along the Arroyo Calafate trail. Along the way, you’ll learn about the region’s characteristic flora and fauna while following the scenic path through the Patagonian landscape. The tour will conclude at Mirador del Arroyo, where you can enjoy the stunning view accompanied by warm spiced wine and confit lamb.

Back at the ranch, you’ll have time to explore the historic buildings at your own pace. Visit the small weaving workshop and learn more about the pioneer families who settled in Patagonia and helped shape life on the vast plains. The day ends in true Argentine style with an asado, featuring grilled meats such as the succulent lamb that Patagonia is famous for, along with baked potatoes and fresh salad. Afterwards, enjoy a lively stage show with music and traditional dance, including tango, folklore, and malambo, where skilled performers swing their characteristic boleadoras in rhythm with the music.

After a fulfilling afternoon and evening, you’ll be driven back to your hotel.
