From mid-June to mid-October, you can join an exciting whale watching cruise from Moreton Island and witness the majestic humpback whales on their annual migration along Australia’s east coast.

From Brisbane, you’ll be driven to the harbour, where a catamaran ferry will take you to Tangalooma Island Resort on Moreton Island. The beautiful crossing over Moreton Bay takes around 75 minutes.

Moreton Island, also known as Mulgumpin, is one of the world’s largest sand islands, renowned for its long beaches, towering dunes, crystal-clear lagoons, and rich marine wildlife surrounding the island.

Tangalooma Island Resort will be your base for the day. Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed by a host who will brief you on the day’s programme, including the departure time of the approximately three-hour whale watching trip. Before and after the tour, you’re free to enjoy the resort’s facilities, including the restaurants, pool, toilets, and changing rooms.

Look forward to an unforgettable cruise aboard a comfortable catamaran, accompanied by an experienced nature guide who will share fascinating insights into the area’s wildlife and the magnificent humpback whales. Each year, thousands of these giants migrate from Antarctica to the warmer waters off Queensland to mate, give birth, and raise their calves. The waters off Moreton Island form part of the so-called ‘Humpback Highway’, providing excellent opportunities to see these remarkable marine mammals up close. With a bit of luck, you may even see them leap from the water, slap their tails, or glide gracefully past the boat.

Along the way, a light lunch will be served, including a drink of your choice.

Back at the resort, you’ll have some time to unwind and enjoy the beautiful beach before sailing back to Brisbane at 4 p.m. after a day filled with natural wonders. Upon arrival, you’ll be driven back to central Brisbane.

Duration: Approx. 9–10 hours. The whale watching tour lasts around 3 hours.

Group size: There may be many participants on the whale watching trip, but it takes place on a large vessel with plenty of space both indoors and out.

The price includes: Return transport from Brisbane to the ferry terminal, ferry to/from Moreton Island, day pass to Tangalooma Island Resort, whale watching excursion with a nature guide, and lunch.

Remember to bring: Clothing suitable for the weather, a cap, and high-factor sunscreen. Also consider swimwear, a towel, and seasickness tablets if you’re prone to motion sickness.

Note: This excursion only operates from mid-June to mid-October. The tour may be cancelled in case of bad weather, in which case it will of course be refunded. Please remember that whales live freely in nature, so sightings can never be guaranteed.
