Experience Uluru up close as you walk all the way around the iconic rock formation with an experienced guide, gaining a fascinating insight into the area’s nature, geology, and the living culture of the Anangu people along the way.
You’ll be picked up from your hotel in Yulara early in the morning, approximately one hour before sunrise, and driven to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. At the foot of Uluru, you’ll begin the day’s approximately 12 km walk around the impressive rock formation.
As you walk, the first light of day slowly spreads across the desert, and you’ll experience the sunrise along the way. As the sun climbs higher in the sky, the light transforms the colours of Uluru and the surrounding landscape – a truly special way to experience the beginning of the day in the Red Centre.
Along the way, you’ll make several stops where your guide will tell you about Uluru’s unique geology, nature, and profound cultural significance to the Anangu people. You’ll pass ancient rock paintings, waterholes, and gorges, while your guide shares the stories and traditions connected to the landscape. These stories form part of Tjukurpa – the knowledge, law, culture, and stories of the Anangu people, passed down through generations.
During the tour, you will also pass areas that are sacred to the Anangu people, where photography is therefore not permitted. Your guide will point these places out along the way, and it is important that the photography ban is respected.
At a suitable point along the way, you will stop in the desert landscape and enjoy a light picnic breakfast, which you will carry with you in the bag provided. This is a chance to rest your legs and take in the silence and the sounds of the surrounding nature before continuing the walk.
After walking approximately 12 km, you will arrive back at the starting point with a completely different appreciation of Uluru’s size, landscape, and cultural significance. You will then be driven back to your hotel in Yulara.
