Would you like one of your first experiences in Costa Rica to be surrounded by breathtaking natural scenery? Then join us on a tour to Irazú Volcano, east of the capital San José, where dramatic landscapes await. You’ll be picked up early in the morning and driven out of the city towards the country’s highest active volcano, rising an impressive 3,432 metres above sea level. The walk to the edge of the crater takes you through lush mountain scenery that changes as you climb higher – from green coffee plantations at the foot of the volcano to the dark, volcanic terrain near the summit.

At the top, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views across the vast crater. On a clear day, you can actually see both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea on either side of the country. Along the way, your guide will explain the area’s geology, which has created the almost lunar landscape surrounding the crater, as well as the volcano’s history and the famous eruption in the 1960s that lasted nearly two years. The tour will end in the old capital, Cartago, where you can visit the beautiful basilica before being driven back to San José.

The walk to the crater is relatively easy, but the thinner air at higher altitude may leave you more short of breath than usual. We always recommend setting your own pace and listening to your body. The weather can also change quickly, so be sure to bring a windproof and waterproof jacket.

Upon arrival back in San José, you will be driven to our Costa Rican partner’s office, where your included packed lunch will be waiting before your welcome meeting begins.

The tour includes: transport, guide, entrance to the national park, and a packed lunch (which will be handed out on arrival at our Costa Rican partner’s office after the tour).

Please bring: A hat, sun cream, snacks, and a windproof and waterproof jacket.

Please note: If you book this tour, your welcome meeting with our Costa Rican partner will take place in the afternoon once you are back in the city, instead of in the morning.
