Experience a flavour-filled evening in an authentic part of Sendai, where the modern city gradually transforms into a living piece of Japanese history.
Make your own way to the wide, central boulevard of Aobadori, which provides a striking contrast to the evening ahead. Here you’ll meet your local guide, and before long, you’ll leave the neon-lit shopping streets behind, venturing into the narrow alleys of Bunka Yokocho and Iroha Yokocho, brimming with retro charm from the Showa period.
Your guide will introduce you to the world of izakayas – traditional Japanese pubs where food, drinks, and companionship go hand in hand. Along the way, you’ll hear about local drinking customs, learn how to say cheers in Japanese, and be introduced to some of Sendai’s distinctive specialities.
Among red lanterns, the aroma of grilled dishes, and the sound of gentle laughter, you’ll visit several small bars and eateries that have been serving loyal customers for more than 70 years. Each venue has its own atmosphere and signature dishes, giving you the chance to sample local specialities and enjoy drinks while chatting with the friendly owners and regulars.
The evening will draw to a close in Iroha Yokocho, where you can choose to continue exploring at your own pace and soak up the nostalgic atmosphere in the charming, narrow alleyways.
