Discover Japan’s first capital on a morning tour through Nara, once the centre of the country’s culture and politics, and today recognised on the UNESCO world heritage list for its historical and spiritual significance.

You’ll meet your guide at your hotel and head out on an atmospheric tour around Nara – a city rich in history, spirituality, and timeless charm. Along the way, your guide will explain Nara’s pivotal role in shaping the Japan we know today, introducing you to the traditions and symbols that still define the city’s temples and shrines.  

Your first stop will be the impressive Todai-ji temple, a wooden architectural masterpiece and the largest building of its kind in the world. Inside stands a 15-metre-high bronze statue of Buddha, which for centuries has been a focal point of Buddhist worship. Your guide will share the story behind the temple’s construction and its significance in the spread of Buddhism in Japan.  

The tour then continues to Kasuga Taisha, one of Japan’s most celebrated Shinto shrines, famous for its vivid red buildings and the many stone and bronze lanterns lining the path to its inner courtyard. Here, you’ll learn about Shinto rituals and the relationship between this life philosophy and Buddhism, which often coexist in harmony.  

The tour will conclude with a peaceful stroll through Nara Park, where more than a thousand tame deer roam freely. According to the Shinto faith, the deer are messengers of the gods, and your guide will share stories about their role as living symbols of the city and its spiritual traditions. The lush park, gentle animals, and surrounding temple landscape together create a unique sense of serenity and timelessness. 

The tour will end at Nara Park, where your guide will be happy to offer recommendations for lunch or places you can continue exploring on your own.
