Join an atmospheric morning tour to Togakushi Shrine, one of Japan’s most sacred and scenic areas, where faith and nature merge beautifully.
You’ll meet your guide at your hotel and head towards Nagano Station, where you’ll take a bus together to Togakushi, a peaceful mountain retreat located northwest of the city. As the journey unfolds, the scenery transforms from urban life to rolling forests, and the atmosphere gradually becomes calmer and more spiritual.
Upon arrival in Togakushi, you’ll begin a stunning walk along a two‑kilometre path lined with majestic cedar trees, some more than 400 years old. Their towering crowns blot out the sky, creating an almost mythical atmosphere that will lead you to the first of Togakushi’s three shrines. This upper shrine is dedicated to a Japanese deity from mythology, associated with strength and divine power.
You’ll then head deeper into the forest to the second, smaller shrine, dedicated to the nine‑headed dragon god, said to bring blessings of water, crops, and good fortune. Here you can learn more about local traditions or purchase a protective amulet as a lasting keepsake.
After the visit, you’ll take the bus down into the valley, where the third of the Togakushi shrines is located. Here, you’ll experience a more vibrant atmosphere with small shops and traditional eateries surrounded by lush forests. Your guide will share stories about the area’s history, local customs, and the connection between the three shrines.
Finally, you’ll return to your hotel, where your guide will be happy to recommend some great places to eat.
