TranzAlpine train across South Island from Greymouth to Christchurch (self-drive)

Experience New Zealand’s dramatic scenery as you cross South Island from Greymouth on the west coast to Christchurch on the east coast aboard one of the world’s most iconic train journeys, the TranzAlpine.

Your tour begins in Greymouth, where you'll leave the rugged beauty of the west coast behind and head into the mountains. Along the way, you'll pass the tranquil, mirror-like Lake Brunner, with the train also making a brief stop in the town of Moana. From here, the train begins its ascent through dense forests and into the heart of the majestic Southern Alps. Among other highlights, you'll travel through the impressive 8-kilometre-long Otira Tunnel, which runs beneath the Main Divide in the Southern Alps, before reaching Arthur’s Pass. Here, snow-capped peaks rise all around you as you take in some of South Island’s most spectacular alpine landscapes. In clear weather, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of deep gorges, rivers, and lush rainforest, which gradually give way to open highland plains as the train continues eastwards.

Have your camera ready as the train crosses the spectacular Staircase Viaduct, which carries the track 73 metres above Staircase Creek, a tributary of the Waimakariri River. Like the Otira Tunnel, the viaduct is an impressive feat of engineering.

At Springfield, the landscape opens up and the rolling Canterbury Plains mark the transition to the lowlands, which accompany you on the final stretch towards your destination, Christchurch.

The train has an open-air observation carriage where you can stand and enjoy the views while taking some fantastic photos along the way. Remember to bring warm clothing if you venture out here. There is also a café on board where you can buy food and drinks.

Upon arrival at Christchurch Railway Station, you will need to take a taxi to your hotel yourself.
