The tour in short
Nyerere National Park, you say? Where – and what – on earth is that?
Well, it’s actually Africa’s largest national park, and it’s located in Tanzania.
The area was previously known as Selous Game Reserve, but following expansion in 2019, its name was changed to Nyerere National Park – named after Tanzania’s first president, Julius Kambarage Nyerere.
Covering an area of more than 30,000 km2, Nyerere is more than twice the size of the Serengeti, but far less famous. And that’s a shame! Because authentic and varied safari experiences are to be had here – and you don’t have to share them with very many other people.
Before you get that far, however, you start the tour by shaking off your everyday life with a few days’ stay in sunny Zanzibar.
You’ll fly directly from here to Nyerere, where unique safari experiences await you in the form of game drives, bush walks and boat trips on Tanzania’s largest river, the Rufiji.
The tour rounds off with yet another few days in the shade of the palm trees in Zanzibar, before flying back to everyday life, both relaxed and many experiences the richer.

What happens on the tour – day by day
Day 1
Flight from your chosen airport to Tanzania
Today is the day you set off from your selected airport and head to Zanzibar, Tanzania with connecting flight(s) on the way.
Day 2
Arrival in Zanzibar
On your arrival in Zanzibar your guide will be waiting for you outside the airport, ready to drive you to the beach hotel where you’ll be staying for the next three nights.

Day 3–4
Relaxation in Zanzibar
The days are yours to do as you please. The resort offers plenty of activities, but you might also just want to laze by the pool with a good book.
Located in the Indian Ocean, Zanzibar consists of the main islands of Unguja (unofficially known as Zanzibar) and Pemba, as well as myriad small islands.
When it comes to nature and culture, Zanzibar is truly spoilt: white sandy beaches, azure sea and a stunning coral reef. A hot, sunny climate all year round is conducive to relaxation and a beach holiday.
The island’s dramatic history includes Arab sultans, Portuguese seafarers, slave trade and European explorers, all of which have left their mark on the island. Situated at the heart of the island is Jozani National Park, known for its rare, red Colobus monkeys, which are not found anywhere else in the world.

Day 5
Zanzibar – Safari in Nyerere National Park
We hope you’re feeling relaxed because you’re going on safari!
You’ll depart from Zanzibar early in the morning. You’ll be picked up from your hotel and driven to the airport, from which you will fly to Nyerere National Park – a flight of just under an hour. We recommend that you pack a small bag with the things you’ll be needing over the next few days and leave the rest of your luggage at the hotel while you’re on safari.
The adventure starts from the moment you touch down, because you’ll be heading straight from the plane to the game drive in Nyerere!
You’ll have to keep your eyes peeled a little more when you’re on a game drive in Nyerere than you did in northern Tanzania. There are more trees and bushes here than in Serengeti, the terrain is more hilly and there’s more – much more – space!
Around half of the wild dogs left in the world are believed to live here in Nyerere. The National Park is also one of the places with the largest number of lions in the whole of Africa, and buffaloes, giraffes and elephants are also abundant here. The bird life is also something quite special, as you’ll see both land birds and water birds. If you’re really lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the shy and much sought-after Pel’s fishing owl, which, as the name suggests, lives almost exclusively on fish.
There’s no guarantee of what you’ll see – but that’s precisely what makes safari so fascinating!
While on the safari, you’ll be having lunch in the bush! When the day’s game drive is over, you’ll be driven to check-in at your camp, where dinner awaits.

Day 6
Nyerere National Park
The day is set aside for adventures in Nyerere National Park.
You’ll start with an exciting bush walk to learn a little more about the nature around you. A bush walk isn’t just about seeing a lot of animals. A bush walk is also about understanding the surrounding nature, and you’ll hear all about plants, tracks, ecosystems, etc.
The day ends with a boat trip on Tanzania’s largest river, the Rufiji. Rufiji is one of the fantastic safari experiences that Nyerere has to offer – and which you don’t get in the Serengeti, where you can’t sail on the rivers.
Rufiji attracts a tremendous number of birds as well as lots of crocodiles and hippos. All animals need water, so during the dry season, they gather on the riverbank to drink and cool down, and a river cruise is, of course, one of the major highlights of Nyerere.
Dinner and a good chat about the day’s experiences await you back at the camp.

Day 7
Nyerere National Park - Zanzibar
After breakfast, you head for the small airstrip in the national park, from which you’ll fly back to Zanzibar. You’ll be picked up from the airport and driven to your hotel, where you can relax and digest the experiences of the last few days.

Day 8–11
Relaxation in Zanzibar
The days in Zanzibar are yours to do as you please. The hotel can help if you wish to go on an excursion, but you can, of course, also just choose to relax at the resort and enjoy the beautiful beach and the clear water.

Departure day
You will be picked up from your hotel and driven to the airport, from which your journey home begins, with connecting flight(s) along the way.
Day 13
Arrival home
You will land at your chosen airport after a relaxing and exciting holiday.
