Wai-O-Tapu is one of New Zealand’s most colourful and fascinating geothermal areas. On a short walk, you’ll encounter a range of spectacular natural phenomena created by thousands of years of volcanic activity. The landscape is dotted with bubbling mud pools, steaming ground, and hot springs in a kaleidoscope of colours, coming together to create an almost surreal experience.

During your visit, you’ll see the iconic Champagne Pool with its bubbling surface and distinctive orange rim, beautifully coloured crater lakes, and steam-filled paths winding through a landscape that feels more like another planet. You can also witness the daily eruption of the Lady Knox Geyser at 10:15 a.m., when water shoots up to 20 metres into the air, or visit the Devil’s Bath—an arresting pool with almost neon-green water.

On this self-guided tour, you’ll follow a clearly marked route of around three kilometres, with information boards and scenic viewpoints along the way. As several of the area’s hot springs and lakes reach temperatures close to boiling point, children should be kept close by, and it’s important to stay on the designated paths.

And yes – there’s a distinct smell of sulphur in the air. It’s simply another sign of the geothermal forces that make Wai-O-Tapu such a unique experience.

Start and end point: Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland Visitor Centre (the address and time are stated on your voucher). Please note that you are responsible for arranging transport to and from the area.

Duration: Approx. 1.5–2.5 hours. You can choose when to visit, but if you wish to see the Lady Knox Geyser eruption, we recommend arriving no later than 9:45 a.m. The park is open daily from 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. (last admission at 3:00 p.m.).

Difficulty level: Easy 

The price includes: Entry ticket to Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, including the Lady Knox Geyser presentation.

Remember to bring: A credit or debit card, as the area is cash-free, along with sturdy closed shoes. During the rainy season, it’s advisable to bring a rain jacket, poncho, or umbrella, while sunscreen and a hat are recommended in the summer months.
