Tickets to Waitomo Glowworm Caves (self-drive)

Venture underground to explore one of New Zealand’s most famous natural attractions. The Waitomo Glowworm Caves have attracted visitors from around the world for more than 130 years and are especially renowned for the thousands of tiny glowworms that illuminate the cave ceilings.

The guided tour begins on foot, as your guide shares the fascinating story of the cave’s history, geology, and the striking limestone formations that have developed over millions of years. Along the way, you’ll pass through several chambers, including the grand Cathedral, celebrated for its remarkable acoustics.

The experience concludes with a tranquil boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto. Here, the boat glides silently through the darkness while thousands of glowworms light up the ceiling, creating a truly magical atmosphere.

Many of the guides are descendants of the Māori chief who helped explore the cave back in 1887. As you journey through, they’ll share their insight into the area’s history, Māori culture, and the glowworms that are unique to New Zealand.
