Sri Lanka’s beaches with a touch of culture

Today marks the beginning of your Sri Lankan adventure. You’ll depart from your selected airport, with connecting flight(s) along the way. 

Welcome to the lush green gem of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka! 

Arriving just north of the capital, Colombo, you’ll pass through immigration and collect your luggage. In the arrivals hall, your guide will be waiting to greet you, holding a TourCompass sign and ready to welcome you with genuine Sri Lankan hospitality.

Afterwards, you’ll take a drive of just under two hours to your hotel by the beautiful Bentota beaches—a long stretch of pale, fine sand along Sri Lanka’s southwest coast.

Once you’ve checked in, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy as you please. Take your first dip of the holiday in the pool or the sea, or settle onto a sun lounger right by the water’s edge, letting the soothing sound of the waves gently ease you into your break.

In the evening, enjoy a leisurely stroll along the beach as the warm colours of the sunset dance across the night sky. Afterwards, nestle into one of the many local restaurants in the area to savour the delicate flavours of Sri Lankan cuisine.

Your days in Bentota are entirely your own, giving you the freedom to spend them just as you wish.

Bentota is one of Sri Lanka’s most beloved beach holiday destinations, inviting you to unwind on its wide, golden sand beaches—stretching north to Beruwala and south to Induruwa. These beaches share the same appealing qualities, making them perfect for relaxing in the shade of a palm tree or enjoying a refreshing swim in the Indian Ocean. Do keep in mind that the waves and currents can occasionally be strong, no matter the time of year.

If you’re into water sports, be sure to visit Bentota’s stunning lagoon, renowned for its wide range of aquatic activities. Here, you can try everything from windsurfing and parasailing to jet skiing.

Head to one of the nearby turtle conservation centres for an up-close encounter with Sri Lanka’s fascinating wildlife. The dedicated teams here work to protect and preserve the sea turtle population, and if you’re lucky, you might witness the magical moment when baby turtles are released into the ocean. You could also opt for a delightful river safari, where mangrove forests shelter rare birds and inquisitive monkeys along the banks.

Along the coastline, you’ll find a fantastic selection of restaurants and bars serving everything from local delicacies to fresh seafood and international favourites. Some spots are set right on the beach, allowing you to savour a meal or a refreshing drink with your toes in the sand, just a few steps from the soothing waves.

Your day begins on Bentota’s wide beaches—enjoy a warm cup of Ceylon tea, letting your feet sink into the soft, golden sand as you soak up the peaceful morning atmosphere.

Next, your journey will take you to the southern coast of Sri Lanka and the colourful city of Galle. Here, you can look forward to delving into the country’s rich history, while some of the south coast’s most beautiful beaches await discovery.

After checking in at your hotel, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy as you please. If you’ve got the energy, you might like to start exploring right away within the walls of Galle Fort. It’s easy to be charmed by the quaint little shops, cosy cafés, and inviting restaurants, all beautifully framed by the town’s fascinating history.

In the late morning, you will meet your guide at your hotel and set off on a guided walking tour through Galle’s cobbled streets.

Galle radiates the charm of its colonial heritage and bears clear traces of past empires. Since the 16th century, the city has been occupied several times, first by Portuguese seafarers who built a fort around the town centre. The Dutch later gained control, expanding the fort into what is today regarded as the best-preserved European-built fort in Southeast Asia, a distinction that has earned Galle Fort a place on the UNESCO world heritage list.

Your city tour begins within the walls of Galle Fort, which also encompasses the city’s charming old quarter. The moment you step through the fort’s main entrance, you’ll feel a lively buzz and be instantly transported back in time as you stroll past classic colonial-era buildings. Throughout the walk, your guide will share fascinating insights into the city, which in many ways reflects Sri Lanka’s vibrant history.

You’ll also pass by Galle’s iconic lighthouse and the fort’s many bastions, offering breathtaking views across the sea and nearby beaches—perfect spots to visit and unwind tomorrow morning if you wish.

Once the guided part of the tour is over, you’ll be free to explore the narrow streets at your own pace. Here, you’ll discover what might just be Sri Lanka’s finest selection of boutique shops, museums, art galleries, restaurants, and cosy cafés.

Today there are no scheduled activities, so you are free to make the day your own before your tour draws to a close.

You can let the many impressions from your tour sink in as you relax on one of the beautiful beaches surrounding Galle. If you’ve upgraded to one of our seaside hotels, you won’t need to venture any further than the shoreline. However, if you’re staying within the walls of Galle Fort, or if you simply want to experience some of Sri Lanka’s finest beaches, you’ll find several within a 35-minute drive.

To the west, you can visit Hikkaduwa, which entices with its golden sands, swaying coconut palms, and waters often visited by curious tropical fish and majestic sea turtles. The same is true of Unawatuna Beach and Jungle Beach, which lie to the east, just 15 minutes from Galle’s historic old town.

You might also set off on a new adventure as a guest on one of our exciting optional tours. These include opportunities to get up close to village life in a traditional Sri Lankan community, or perhaps join a whale watching excursion if you are travelling between December and April.

In the evening, you can stroll along the ancient city walls, taking in the views of the sparkling sea before settling in at one of Galle’s colourful restaurants to reminisce about the many experiences you’ve had during your tour.

The morning is yours to spend as you wish, giving you ample opportunity to pick up some unique treasures in the charming little shops and galleries of Galle Fort. Alternatively, why not settle down at a cosy café and enjoy a freshly brewed cup of tea or coffee as you soak up the vibrant atmosphere in the picturesque streets? 

Later, your guide will collect you and take you to the delightful seaside town of Mirissa, where you’ll check in at a beachfront hotel for the final days of your beach holiday.

Upon arrival at the hotel, you’ll check in and the rest of the day is yours to enjoy at leisure.

Mirissa is relatively peaceful and is made up of three small bays, each fringed with swaying coconut palms that stretch over stunning, paradise-like beaches. Despite being one of Sri Lanka’s most popular beach destinations, Mirissa still offers a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, making it the perfect place to unwind and take life at a slower pace.

There are no scheduled activities during your time in Mirissa, so you have complete freedom to decide how you’d like to spend your days.

The beaches of Mirissa are perfect for some well-deserved relaxation, though do bear in mind that the waves and currents can be strong at any time of year. Each beach offers something special: enjoy snorkelling at Turtle Bay or Parrot Rock, or take a dip in the tranquil waters of the secluded Secret Beach, which is sheltered by surrounding rocks. At the western end of Mirissa’s main beach, you can learn to surf, and if you fancy stretching your skills, just a 10-minute tuk-tuk ride brings you to the neighbouring town of Weligama, known for offering some of Sri Lanka’s best beginner surf conditions.

The waters off the coast of Mirissa are also reputed as one of Sri Lanka’s best whale watching spots. The warm Indian Ocean here provides the ideal habitat for marine giants, giving you a great chance of spotting blue whales, fin whales, sperm whales, and playful dolphins.

You’ll find a handful of excellent restaurants lining the beaches, where you can sip coconut drinks and feast on delicious seafood for lunch, all while listening to the waves breaking just a few metres away.

As evening draws in, why not make your way to the popular Coconut Tree Hill – the perfect spot to watch the sun dip behind the hill’s many coconut palms. There’s even a local bar here where you can enjoy a refreshing drink as the sky comes alive with magnificent colours.

Your Sri Lankan beach escape is coming to an end, but the wonderful memories will stay with you for a lifetime.
