Arrival in Hanoi

Welcome to Vietnam!

After your arrival, you’ll pass through immigration and collect your luggage. Outside the arrivals hall, your guide will be waiting for you, wearing a TourCompass uniform and holding a TourCompass sign so you can easily spot them.

From the airport, you’ll be driven to your hotel in the heart of Hanoi. Along the way, you’ll get your first impressions of Vietnam’s vibrant capital, where scooters, small shops, and street kitchens dominate the city scene.

After checking in at your hotel, the rest of the day is yours to spend as you please. We highly recommend exploring the narrow, lively streets of the Old Quarter, where there’s plenty to see for both adults and children, and each corner reveals something new.

You could also enjoy a leisurely walk around Hoan Kiem Lake, a popular oasis in the middle of the city. Here, local families, young people, and the elderly gather to take a break from the bustle of city life.

In the evening, you can go in search of Vietnamese specialities such as pho (noodle soup), banh mi (sandwich), or crispy spring rolls at one of the many small restaurants or street kitchens in the area.

Day 3
City tour of Hanoi

Enjoy a leisurely morning at your own pace before your guide meets you at the hotel for an afternoon exploring some of Hanoi’s fascinating cultural highlights.

Your first stop on today’s city tour will be the Temple of Literature, founded in 1070 and considered Vietnam’s first university. This beautifully preserved temple complex features peaceful courtyards, ancient trees and traditional pavilions where Vietnamese scholars have studied for centuries. Here, you’ll learn about Confucius and the scholars who once travelled here to study – and you might even recognise the spot depicted on Vietnam’s 100,000 VND banknote.

Next, you’ll enjoy a cyclo ride of around 45 minutes. Sit back and relax as your driver gently pedals through the lively streets of the Old Quarter. You’ll pass through the historic area of 36 streets, each one traditionally known for its own specific craft or trade. There’s plenty to take in along the way as local life unfolds all around you.

Late in the afternoon, you’ll experience a traditional water puppet show – a truly unique Vietnamese art form. Colourful wooden puppets perform on a stage of water while musicians play and narrate stories about rural life, ancient legends, and amusing everyday scenes. The performance is both captivating and entertaining.

The day will conclude with dinner at a local restaurant, where you can sample some of Vietnam’s classic dishes.

Afterwards, you’ll be driven back to your hotel. If you still have energy, you might choose to stay in the city to soak up Hanoi’s evening atmosphere before making your own way back to the hotel.

Day 4
Exploring Hanoi on your own

Today, you have plenty of time to discover Vietnam’s vibrant capital at your own pace.

You could start your day with a visit to the famous Train Street. Mornings tend to be quieter here, making it easier to soak up the unique atmosphere of this narrow street where the train passes right by the houses and the little cafés lining the tracks several times a day.

From here, you can continue into the old quarter, where the narrow streets buzz with life. It’s the perfect spot to take a break or sample some of Hanoi’s many street food specialities.

If you’d like a break from the city’s pace, head to the large West Lake area, where there’s a bit more peace and space. Here, you’ll find temples, small parks, and charming cafés overlooking the water.

As evening approaches, make your way to the beautiful Hoan Kiem Lake. Locals and visitors alike gather here for an evening stroll while the city lights reflect in the water.

You might end the day perched on a small plastic stool at a street kitchen in the old quarter.

Along the way, the scenery gradually changes from the dense city traffic to open landscapes with rice fields, small villages, and limestone mountains rising dramatically from the ground.

After around 2½ hours’ drive, you’ll arrive in Tam Coc, where you’ll be staying for the next few days. Life here moves at a more relaxed pace and nature takes centre stage.

The rest of the day is yours to spend as you wish. You can relax at the hotel, take a dip in the pool, or walk or cycle towards the centre of Tam Coc, where you’ll find small cafés, shops, and local restaurants.

Day 6
Cycling tour to the village of Mai Trung and boat trip at Van Long Nature Reserve

Today is all about nature and discovering the local life of Ninh Binh.

Your guide and driver will pick you up from the hotel and take you to the Gia Vien district, where your cycling tour of around 14 km begins. Here, you’ll jump on your bike and pedal along small country roads past lush rice fields and rural villages at a leisurely pace. Along the way, there’s plenty of time to stop, take in the scenery, and capture some great photos of the beautiful surroundings.

You’ll arrive in the village of Mai Trung, where you’ll visit a local family who will warmly welcome you into their home. Here, you’ll gain an insight into rural life and, together with the family, take part in seasonal activities such as working in the rice fields, gardening, or feeding fish and poultry.

After your visit, the family will invite you into their kitchen for a cooking class. Here, you’ll be introduced to Vietnamese cuisine and take part in preparing some of the dishes yourself. The experience concludes with a home-cooked lunch, enjoyed in the family’s relaxed surroundings.

Afterwards, you’ll cycle back to the starting point, just a few minutes’ ride away. Here, you’ll drop off the bicycles before continuing by car towards Van Long. You’ll then board a traditional rowing boat and glide through the tranquil nature reserve. Along the way, you’ll experience calm wetlands, dramatic limestone cliffs, and an abundance of birdlife. The mountains rise steeply from the water while the lush vegetation reflects beautifully on the still surface.

Late in the afternoon, you’ll be driven back to your hotel after a day filled with natural beauty and insights into local life.

Day 7
Ninh Binh – flight to Da Nang – Hoi An

Today, you’ll leave Ninh Binh and will be driven to Hanoi airport for your flight to central Vietnam and the charming town of Hoi An. The flight from Hanoi to Da Nang takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Upon arrival in Da Nang, your guide will be waiting for you outside the arrivals hall, just beyond the exit doors. The guide will be wearing a TourCompass uniform and holding a TourCompass sign, making it easy for you to spot them. From there, you’ll be driven to your hotel in Hoi An.

After around an hour’s drive, you’ll arrive at your hotel. Once you’ve checked in, the rest of the day is yours to spend as you wish.

Hoi An is an experience in itself – a town that many people fall in love with almost instantly. The old quarter, listed on the UNESCO world heritage list, is especially known for its well-preserved architecture, proud silk tradition, and abundance of skilled tailors. Life seems to move at a gentler pace here, and history can be felt in the narrow streets, colourful façades, and charming little shops.

The Thu Bon River flows through the heart of the town and was an important hub for international trade during the 1600s and 1700s. Today, it provides a beautiful backdrop to daily life, with small boats gliding quietly along its waters.

Away from the river, a labyrinth of atmospheric streets unfolds. Here, you’ll encounter a vibrant mix of Japanese wooden houses, Chinese temples, French colonial buildings, and the characteristic merchant houses. Colourful lanterns hang like garlands above the streets, creating a wonderfully special atmosphere, particularly after dark. Shops, street food stalls, cafés, and small restaurants sit side by side, inviting exploration for travellers of all ages.

Day 9
Full-day cycling tour outside Hoi An including lantern workshop

Enjoy a day brimming with local experiences just beyond Hoi An, where you’ll get close to nature, meet local families, and learn about some of the region’s traditional crafts.

You’ll be picked up from your hotel and taken to the starting point of the day’s cycling tour. Here, you’ll go through the day’s itinerary, have your bicycles adjusted to your height, and receive your helmets.

Afterwards, you’ll set off on a calm and easy bike ride of around 16–20 km with several stops along the way. You’ll cycle along narrow village roads and small paths, passing lush green rice fields.

The first stop is the village of Tra Que, famous for its fragrant vegetables and herbs, as well as its traditional cultivation methods. Together with your guide, you’ll take a walk through the vegetable gardens and learn how the local farmers plant, fertilise, and harvest their crops following age-old traditions. You’ll also have the chance to get your hands dirty in the garden by raking the soil and planting seeds yourself. Afterwards, you’ll take part in a short cooking demonstration before enjoying a tasty lunch made with fresh vegetables straight from the fields.

Your next stop is a small lantern workshop, where you’ll be introduced to one of Hoi An’s most iconic crafts. Here, a fun workshop awaits as local artisans show how silk and bamboo are transformed into the colourful lanterns that the town is so well known for. You can choose your own colours and patterns and create your very own lantern to take home as a personal keepsake.

The last stop of the day is the village of Cam Thanh, peacefully surrounded by water coconut palms. Here, you’ll visit a local family and gain an insight into their daily life and traditions. Afterwards, you’ll step aboard a round bamboo boat and glide gently through the waterways of the coconut palm forest.

After an eventful day, you’ll cycle back to Hoi An with a deeper appreciation for the area’s culture, craftsmanship, and natural beauty.

Please note that children must be able to ride a bicycle safely on their own. A child seat can be requested but cannot be guaranteed.

Beach holiday on Phu Quoc

The next few days are dedicated to relaxation and exploring at your own pace.

Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s largest island and, in recent years, it has become an increasingly popular destination for both Vietnamese and international travellers.

Along the coast, the sea invites you in for a refreshing swim in the warm waters, while the beaches offer plenty of space for sandcastle building and fun. Around the southern An Thoi Islands, you’ll also find excellent snorkelling opportunities among colourful fish and coral reefs.

The island also offers a variety of experiences ideal for families. You can visit VinWonders amusement park in the north, which features a water park and activities suitable for all ages. In the southern part of the island, you can ride the world’s longest cable car over the sea to Hon Thom Island – an experience that’s a highlight in itself.

The atmosphere on Phu Quoc varies from one area to another. In and around the main town, Duong Dong, there’s a lively vibe with shops and a wide selection of restaurants to suit every taste. Along the beaches, you can enjoy stunning sunsets, while beyond the town awaits a calmer and more relaxed pace.

As you travel further inland, you’ll discover another side of the island, with small villages and local surroundings that offer an authentic glimpse into everyday life on Phu Quoc.
