Valentine’s Day 2027: 5 destinations for couples who’ve had enough of red roses

Red roses. Chocolate hearts. A table for two at the local restaurant. The classic Valentine’s Day on 14 February can certainly be lovely, but if you’ve already experienced it a few times – or simply feel that the ultimate romantic gesture would be to set an out-of-office reply and head out into the world together – fortunately, there are some great alternatives.

After all, why settle for roses when you could enjoy romantic sunsets on a tropical island in the Indian Ocean? Go on a road trip through New Zealand’s magnificent landscapes? Or climb a mountain together?

Flowers may wither, after all. A shared tour is something you can remember and talk about for years to come.

We’ve put together five fantastic destinations for Valentine’s Day 2027 for couples dreaming of more than the classic date and looking to add a little more adventure to their love story.

Sri Lanka and the Maldives: Two worlds, one tour for two

On a tour to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, you can celebrate your love with adventure, unforgettable experiences, and precious time together in tropical surroundings.

Sri Lanka is a wonderfully diverse country, offering a wealth of experiences – from colourful cultural heritage and historic temples to lush highlands, tea plantations, and abundant wildlife. Here, you can visit iconic UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Lion Rock in Sigiriya and Dambulla Cave Temple, travel by train through lush mountain landscapes, and go on safari in national parks home to elephants, leopards, colourful birds, and crocodiles.

After enjoying your fill of adventure, you can slow down and savour time together in the Maldives. Turquoise waters, dazzling white sandy beaches, and sunsets that look as though they belong on a postcard await you.

It is precisely the contrast between the experience-filled Sri Lanka and the peaceful, exotic Maldives that makes combining these two worlds such an obvious choice for a romantic tour.

Kilimanjaro: The ultimate IKEA test

They say you really get to know each other when you put together an IKEA flat-pack. We’d like to suggest an alternative: climb Africa’s highest mountain together.

A hike to the summit of Kilimanjaro may not be the most obvious Valentine’s date, but it is hard to imagine a greater shared triumph than standing together on the summit of Kilimanjaro.

The route there is just as much a part of the experience. Along the way, you pass through several different landscapes, from lush rainforest and open heathland to stark alpine desert closer to the summit. The Lemosho Route is considered one of the most beautiful routes up Kilimanjaro, giving you plenty of time both to enjoy the spectacular panoramic views and to acclimatise to the altitude.

You can round off your adventure by resting your tired legs on Zanzibar’s exotic sandy beaches. You can also combine it with a safari and experience Tanzania’s wild animals.

Mountain climbing, a beach holiday, and the Big Five – it’s hard for a box of chocolates to compete with that…

Argentina: wine in the glass and adventure on the horizon

Couple walking along a path between vineyards in Mendoza, Argentina

If your idea of romance involves good food, a fine glass of wine, and spectacular natural experiences, Argentina is an obvious choice for a Valentine’s Day tour.

In the capital, Buenos Aires, you can stroll hand in hand along broad boulevards and admire the fascinating architecture that has earned the city the nickname, ‘Paris of South America’. Along the way, explore the vibrant Palermo neighbourhood, particularly known for its street art, take in the colourful façades of La Boca, or settle down at a café and watch the city go by.

As evening falls, it’s the perfect time to discover some of the things Argentina is best known for. Enjoy a dinner of classic Argentine dishes and succulent steaks, and raise a glass of Mendoza wine to your love. Tango is also an inseparable part of Buenos Aires’ identity, and all around the city you can experience the passionate dance that originated right here.

The scenery changes dramatically as you continue your tour to experience some of Argentina’s greatest natural highlights. Marvel together at the mighty Iguazú Falls, surrounded by subtropical rainforest, and stand side by side in front of the fascinating Perito Moreno Glacier – experiences you will remember for years to come.

New Zealand: Together on four wheels

In New Zealand, you can enjoy the freedom of an adventurous road trip, following the open road together and discovering the country’s endless natural wonders at your own pace.

Here, you can get behind the wheel, put on your favourite playlist, and enjoy the changing landscapes together. You’ll travel through a country of everything from green vineyards and volcanic landscapes to snow-capped mountain peaks, sparkling lakes, and dramatic fjords.

On the North Island, you can experience the geothermal landscapes around Rotorua, where hot springs and bubbling mud pools bear witness to the area’s volcanic activity. If you share a love of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, you can also visit Hobbiton and explore the world-famous hobbit holes from the films.

On the South Island, you can drive along the shores of beautiful Lake Pukaki, with views of Mount Cook/Aoraki, experience impressive glacial landscapes, and sail between the steep mountain walls of Milford Sound. And perhaps, along the way, you’ll discover a favourite place of your very own that was never part of the plan.

February falls in the middle of the New Zealand summer, making it an ideal month for a road trip, with long days and generally good conditions for exploring the country by car.

The many miles you’ll cover together leave plenty of time for long conversations, spontaneous detours, and new experiences to share.

USA’s east coast: Hand in hand from city to city

In February, the USA’s east coast reveals its more wintry side, creating the perfect setting for a city break filled with museum visits, cosy café stops, and long walks among historic landmarks and atmospheric neighbourhoods.

Rather than settling in one city, you can hop on the train and visit several of the east coast’s classics on a single tour. The tour takes you from Washington D.C. to Philadelphia, New York and Boston, allowing you to experience four very different cities, each with its own history and atmosphere. Take in the monumental surroundings of the Presidents’ city, feel the echoes of history in Philadelphia where the US Declaration of Independence was drafted, and watch the New York City skyline unfold as you sail past the iconic Statue of Liberty.

Instead of having to keep an eye on the GPS, you can sit back between the cities, watch the landscape glide past the window, and look forward to your next stop. The train takes you straight from city centre to city centre, making the time between experiences part of the tour – and perhaps a welcome opportunity to simply hold hands and enjoy the journey.
