Vietnam is a land of striking contrasts. Here you’ll find lush rice fields, bustling cities, golden beaches, and a culture that both fascinates and surprises.
But what is it really like to travel through Vietnam with kids? Is it safe? And which experiences are best suited for the whole family?
Read our guide to a family holiday in Vietnam, filled with adventure and discovery.
Can you travel to Vietnam with kids?
Yes, Vietnam is a safe and family-friendly destination that suits children of all ages. The country offers great variety, a welcoming local population, and efficient ways to get around – making it one of Southeast Asia’s top choices for a family holiday.
Vietnam is a fascinating and diverse destination that warmly welcomes families, and children are often greeted with big smiles from the Vietnamese.
The country works wonderfully no matter the children’s ages. Younger ones can enjoy boat trips and the beach, while older children are often drawn to the street food culture and active experiences in nature. Despite Vietnam’s vast size, domestic flights, trains, and private transfers make it easy and comfortable to travel between destinations without long, tiring drives.
What makes Vietnam a great family destination?

Vietnam offers something truly special when it comes to travelling with children. On a single tour, you can sail between limestone cliffs, cycle through small villages, explore colourful markets, and unwind on the beach.
The many child-friendly experiences aren’t just about seeing things but about getting involved. For example, you might take part in a traditional tea ceremony, join a calligraphy class, cycle through Ninh Binh, or have a go at making your own lanterns in Hoi An.
These were also some of the activities our colleagues Mira and Dino enjoyed when they explored Vietnam with their kids. Read about their experiences in their travelogue.
When is the best time to travel to Vietnam with kids?
It’s generally best to travel to Vietnam with kids between January and April, when it’s the dry season across most of the country – offering ideal conditions for travelling from north to south.
However, Vietnam is a year-round destination with a varied climate from north to south, so the best time to visit really depends on which regions you plan to explore.
The best time to visit by region:

Best places in Vietnam for kids
Vietnam can be explored from north to south with children, but some destinations stand out for their family-friendly experiences, manageable distances, and activities designed with children in mind.
Here are some of the best places to include on a tour of Vietnam with kids. You can also experience several of these destinations on our dedicated family tour in Vietnam.
Hanoi

For many families, Hanoi marks the beginning of their adventure in Vietnam.
The Vietnamese capital is lively and brimming with impressions, while also offering a wonderful introduction to the country’s culture. In the Old Quarter, you can wander through narrow streets, taste Vietnam’s many delicious dishes, and experience everyday life up close.
You can also explore the city on a cyclo ride, a traditional bicycle rickshaw, where you can sit back, relax, and watch the historic streets glide past.
Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh is often called “Ha Long Bay on land” – and with good reason. Here, you’ll see dramatic limestone cliffs rising majestically from lush green rice paddies.
The area lies south of Hanoi and offers a peaceful alternative to the bustling city. Life moves at a naturally slower pace here, making it a perfect stop on a tour with children.
Ninh Binh is ideal for gentle bike rides along quiet country roads winding through rice fields and small villages, where you can get a close-up glimpse of local life – perhaps even joining a cooking class with a local family.
Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay is one of Vietnam’s most iconic natural wonders and a favourite among both children and adults.
Here, you’ll sail between dramatic limestone cliffs rising from the emerald-green waters, spending the night aboard a charming ship and waking up in the heart of one of Vietnam’s greatest attractions.
The days often offer calm activities such as kayaking, a bit of island hopping, or simply taking in the views from the deck. The pace is relaxed, leaving plenty of room for both unwinding and adventure.
Hoi An

Hoi An is a charming coastal town in central Vietnam, particularly well-suited for families.
The town is famous for its colourful lanterns, cosy streets, and relaxed atmosphere. There’s less traffic here than in the bigger cities, making it easier and safer to get around with children – especially in the old UNESCO quarter, where cars are not allowed.
You can stroll through the streets and soak up the atmosphere, enjoy one of the many excellent restaurants, or head to one of the nearby beaches, Cua Dai or An Bang, both offering soft sand and swaying palm trees. For those dreaming of a more active experience, Hoi An offers a unique opportunity to get close to local life on a cycling tour – for example, on the outskirts of town, where you’ll pass rice fields and the fragrant herb village of Tra Que.
Phu Quoc

If you dream of ending your tour with pure relaxation, Vietnam’s largest island, Phu Quoc, is the perfect choice.
Here you’ll find some of Vietnam’s finest beaches, with soft sand and calm, shallow waters ideal for children. The island offers a laid-back atmosphere and the perfect opportunity to unwind completely after an adventure-filled tour.
Of course, you can spend your days by the beach, but Phu Quoc also offers plenty of activities for families. For example, you can visit the main town of Duong Dong with its lively night market, enjoy the VinWonders amusement park, or take one of the world’s longest cable cars across to Hon Thom Island, which features a large water park among other attractions.
Experiences for children of all ages

Travelling with little ones, school-aged children, or teenagers can make for very different experiences, but whatever their age, we’re certain that Vietnam has something to suit every child’s taste.
Below, you can read about the best experiences in Vietnam for children of different age groups.
For babies and toddlers: Beach life in peaceful surroundings
Vietnam’s coastal regions offer the perfect setting for adventures with the youngest travellers in your family.
With soft sandy beaches, shallow waters, and warm temperatures, it’s easy to enjoy a calm and relaxing day by the sea. Little ones can play at the water’s edge, build sandcastles, and take breaks in the shade while the whole family soaks up the laid-back atmosphere.
When travelling with very young children, it’s worth considering staying within one region to minimise travel time between destinations.
For younger children: Nature and adventures made for little explorers
The country’s iconic natural scenery offers a true adventure for younger children.
Boat trips in Ha Long Bay (or one of Vietnam’s other bays) among dramatic limestone formations and bike rides through the lush landscapes of Ninh Binh are sure to delight the younger ones.
For older children and teenagers: Culture, food, and active adventures
Imagine your children taking the lead as you wander through vibrant cities such as Hanoi in search of new flavours and hidden gems.
Vietnam’s big cities are fantastic places to visit with your older children, giving you all an authentic glimpse into everyday life in Vietnam as you stroll along Train Street in Hanoi or try some of the city’s specialities such as Bún chả.
